I'm ready for my close-up, Mr. DeMille ...

I wanted to check out an art gallery showing in Newport today and afterward I walked over to the ocean overlook where invariably there are lots of gulls, all looking for handouts. If my lens had focused closer than four feet, I could have gotten even closer to this guy -- he was fearless. ©Carol Leigh

Gulls at sunset

What makes this photo appealing to me is the quality of the light and the texture in the clouds. I wish the birds had been sharp, but on the other hand I like the feeling of movement that blurred birds create. Beautiful day here on the coast today. ©Carol Leigh

Quick trip up the coast

We had some errands to run up in Lincoln City, so I took a few drive-by shots en route, the best of which (which isn't all that good) is this photo of a lone tree on a windswept bluff. And then a stop at Road's End to watch the waves while a gull watched us, hoping for a handout. Cold, cloudy day and then the rains really hit on the drive back. The best part of the trip is that I found two more oil cans to add to my stash! I anticipate great things from these finds. ©Carol Leigh

Gulls at Yaquina Bay

Sunshine, no rain, so I headed up to Newport to check out the fishing boats. With such bright sunlight coming from the right, I decided to turn this shot into a silhouette. I exposed for the bright water, not caring if everything else went black. Yup, more photos of gulls! At least I'm putting them in context, however, showing you where they live, what they're doing, what their environment looks like. Not just another bird-on-a-stick shot . . . ©Carol Leigh

Bird on a stick . . .

What is it about gulls that we just HAVE to photograph them? The world certainly doesn't need another photo of a gull, but when they're there, so close, it's almost impossible not to click the shutter. We were at Nye Beach today and I liked the way I could see Yaquina Head Lighthouse off in the distance as well as the gull sitting on the post. One more gull photo . . . in a continuing series, I'm afraid. ©Carol Leigh
