Botanical study

It rained last night and as a result, everything in the back yard was covered with little droplets of water this morning. I tried a variety of lenses to see what I could do, beginning with an 18-55mm lens, then went for the 50mm f/1.8 with a 1.4X teleconverter. Then I took the teleconverter off and played with the 50mm and an extension tube, opting for an aperture of f/1.8 for extreeeeeemly shallow depth of field. Frankly, nothing I shot this morning really wowed me. But I thought I'd play with this stem/leaf photo of an opium poppy plant. Because depth of field was so shallow, it reminded me of an old-fashioned botanical study, so that's the look I tried to enhance. I made the photo less of a clear green, darkened some of it, grunged some of it, and this is the result. Do I like it? I don't know right now. But what I DO like is the fun of experimentation. ©Carol Leigh

Everything you do works. You got me looking closely at this photo for a long time.

Question: I ordered a Sigma APO Tele converter 1.4x DG. I've been afraid to use it on the 50mm 1.4 lens as the brochure doesn't list the 50mm in their compatibility with len's list. Any idea? Or, where would I search to get some answers? I want to try the lens but am afraid to as they warn you can do irreparable damage on the wrong lens.

Aaaarrrrgggghhhh! I don't think the comment box works with Firefox. I typed a long answer to your question only to have it never show up. Bottom line, no, your f/1.4 Canon lens is not compatible with the Sigma T/C you have. Since they warn of "irreparable damage," please don't try it. Instead, do you have extension tubes? Try using a 20mm extension tube with your 50mm f/1.4 lens. That will get you in close and you'll still have very shallow DOF. Good luck! -- Carol Leigh

Thanks Carol. I will buy an extension tube as you suggest. When I ordered the teleconverter I thought I was ordering an extension tube. Newbee here is trying to make sense of all this "stuff".

Have you used this teleconverter on your 70 - 200 L series lens? The paperwork says you can. I'm afraid to use it.

Linda, I don't have that teleconverter, so no, I've not used it with the 70-200. (I've got a T/C that's designed just for L lenses.) You know what? Get rid of that thing! Sell it and get a Canon one so you're not fretting over it. Or don't even get a Canon one. Don't buy one at all. Unless you're doing lots of wildlife shots, why do you need it? -- Carol Leigh
